I presently reside in Corralitos, California. My present artwork consists of paintings on raw canvas with mixed media, paintings with fabric collage on canvas and large ceramic sculptures. The following describes my process:
I work from a place of allowing my imagination and creative process to arise through daily meanderings in my sketchbook. Upon leafing through a series of sketches I decide which one resonates with me the most, and whether it would work better as a painting or sculpture.
My paintings are often initiated on a large piece of raw canvas stapled to the wall. I work the canvas in one direction, take it down and work it from another direction, adding or subtracting various elements. I then stretch the canvas over stretcher bars and work further on it, rotating it in every direction. Part of the reason for this process is so that I don't become too attached to any one element in the painting but allow the composition to emerge of its own accord.
The sculptures are quite different as they are a definite shape and size that doesn't alter much. Instead I alter my sculptures by cutting out shapes from the walls of the clay. I even create inner compartments to some of these forms. Other sculptures I add appendages and connect various globular shapes. Since I build my pieces with thick slabs and fire them at a high temperature they tend to stay structurally sound.
My sculptures, in fact, have arisen out of my building adobe homes and altering various adobe structures in the 1990s. From here I practiced stone carving, bronze casting, mixed media wood constructions and finally clay sculptures.-
Presently I look forward to seeing how far I can push clay as a medium, as well as, develop new directions for my raw expressive paintings.
